Hace algunos días tuve la oportunidad de charlar con Ivan García, creador de Vagos.es. La charla fue un poco técnica a ratos, puesto que le pregunte por cosas que me interesan de modo más personal, no obstante, para todos los que os sorprendisteis con los cambios que se dieron en Vagos.es, y en general, para todos los que os interese el problema de la difusión de material protegido por internet, creo que es una lectura recomendable.
Por si no conocéis Vagos.es decir que hasta hace poco era la primera referencia de descargas directas hispanas. En especial el foro de música Hip-Hop tenía el mayor recopilatorio de este género en descarga directa, todo un lujo. Vagos.es llegó a estar entre las 15 webs más visitadas en España, (segun el ranking de Alexa). Finalmente la web fue vendida a la empresa Wamba, quien recientemente por problemas con Promusicae, se ha visto obligada a retirar todos los enlaces a material protegido.
Sin más os dejo la charla (mis preguntas van en negrita), y agradecer a Iván su amabilidad.
Antes de nada, hablame un poco de ti, de donde eres, a que te dedicas, y esas cosas
Pues me llamo Iván García , soy de Oviedo , empece en esto de internet en el 2003 mas o menos , naci en 1984 , y ahora mismo me defino como emprendedor, vivo de internet… y estudio derecho.Hablame un poco de Vagos, como y cuando se creo, como creció tan rápidamente, con que idea creaste la página, etc.
Si no recuerdo mal, se creo en noviembre del 2005 , el dia exacto no lo recuerdo, pero el veinti algo… hacia poco que se habia abierto el registro de dominios .es , y vi que vagos.es estaba libre…. me pareció un nombre con tiron, con gancho, entre otras cosas porque yo soy un vago redomado (creo que nos pasa a muchos que estamos en el ordenador). La idea la tuve clara desde el principio, hacer una comunidad de vagos, que hasta entonces no existía, así que cree un foro con phpbb.Al principio ponía alguna descarga de música o de juegos… y poco a poco los usuarios fueron entrando y fueron participando en el foro porque se sentían cómodos… entre otras cosas por no haber apenas publicidad… asi fue como empezó todo mas o menos.
Por comunidad de vagos te refieres sencillamente a gente vaga ? Personalmente siempre pensé que el nombre de “vagos” iba en el sentido un sitio donde encontrar descargas sin tener que “esforzarse”
Si, en principio quería hacer una comunidad de vagos (gente como yo) que no le apeteciese hacer otra cosa que estar en el foro “perdiendo el tiempo”. Evidentemente la comunidad fue a desembocar en el sitio referencia de descargas directas hispano¿En cuanto tiempo sucedió eso ?
Es dificil dar una fecha exacta, todo fue exponencial, pero ya a los 3 o 4 meses tuve que poner un servidor dedicado mas para soportar la carga de base de datos de los usuarios.Hiciste alguna campaña de publicidad en adsense u otros medios para dar la web a conocer, o tan solo el boca a boca ?
Yo he trabajado algún tiempo de consultor SEO, es mi especialidad… y al principio iba entrando la gente mediante google principalmente, ademas del boca a boca claro. En parte influyo que era de los primeros sitios en utilizar rapidshare, megaupload, etc y dejarlo abierto para todo el mundo… casi todas las webs cierran el contenido a los invitados… y a mi parecer es un error, de echo, hasta que marche yo, vagos siempre estuvo abierto a invitados.¿Modificaste el phpBB para aplicar técnicas de SEO y ganar PageRank?
Jeje bueno por modificar el phpbb no se gana pagerank… el pagerank se basa en los enlaces, pero si modifique el phpbb para hacerlo con urls amigables , quitar contenido duplicado, cambiar cabeceras, los títulos, etc… y fui consiguiendo enlaces poco a poco…¿Como surgió la venta de Vagos ? ¿Como contactaste con Wamba? ¿Habías recibido otras ofertas anteriormente?
Pues un año antes de la venta , estuve a punto de venderlo, ya que vagos producía un enorme gasto en servidores y cada mes estaba poniendo dinero de mi bolsillo… pero de pronto aparecieron patrocinadores y los gastos mas o menos se compensaban con los ingresos. No había muchos ingresos, al ser material con copyright, Adsense estaba prohibido… y había pocas alternativas salvo los sponsors directos… así que ingresos se puede decir que obtuve alguno el ultimo año. A finales del 2007 contacto conmigo Enrique Dubois (de Wamba), se vino hasta Oviedo para negociar, y cerramos el acuerdo.Supongo que para ti hubiese sido relativamente fácil, tras cerrar la venta, montar a la semana siguiente otra web muy similar con la misma formula, y tratar de repescar a tus usuarios. ¿Adquiriste algún tipo de compromiso de no hacer esto?
Asi es… era una clausula de contrato , de todos modos es casi un compromiso personal… no es difícil saltarse esas clausulas, ademas no quería seguir… Siendo dueño de vagos.es , hay veces que no duermes tranquilo :)¿Por que dices que a veces no se duerme tranquilo?
Pues es una comunidad muy grande, muchísimos usuarios , muchos moderadores, muchos trolls, mucho spam, mucho material con derechos de autor… y yo soy solo una persona. Es difícil llevar eso un día tras otro… aunque todos los moderadores , y administradores me ayudaban muchísimo, pero siempre tiene que haber una cabeza de mando , un jefe , y ese evidentemente era yo.¿Que crees que perseguía Wamba con la compra de Vagos.es?
Usuarios, visitas. Es un foro, creo que tienen bastante que ver con las redes sociales, como en este caso Wamba.¿Crees que les ha merecido la pena la compra ?
Yo creo que si , Wamba tenia una inversión muy grande por parte de skype (3 millones de euros)… tenían el dinero, les hacia falta usuarios y visitas y era lo que yo tenia.Por otra parte yo vendí vagos porque a mi parecer se había acabado mi etapa allí… lo había llevado al éxito, que es lo que me gusta hacer… y para mi ya había perdido la gracia y la motivación… ademas lo vendí a una empresa que sabia que no se iba a deshacer de vagos y pulverizarlo (al menos directamente).
Actualmente, segun el ranking de Alexa.com, Vagos.es está en el puesto 16 en la lista de sitios que más trafico generan en España. Esto en visitas únicas/dia, ¿de cuanto se trata?
Alexa tampoco es una fuente fiable 100% , ahora mismo no sé cuantas visitas tendrá… cuando lo dejé tenia unas 300.000 – 400.000 al día.Eres conocedor de los problemas que ha tenido recientemente Vagos.es con Promusicae. En tu etapa al frente de Vagos, ¿que tipo de problemas se te presentaron con SGAE, Promusicae, etc.?
La verdad que no muchos… la SGAE y Promusicae se comunicaban conmigo para que borrase determinados post… yo simplemente los borraba… tampoco se dan cuenta que esos archivos siguen existiendo… ya que realmente estan en rapidshare, megaupload, etc… Tambien me llegaron avisos de algun escritor… y los de Winrar me avisaban cada semana donde estaba colgado el Winrar para que lo borrase.¿Determinados post ? ¿Iban a por discos en concreto ?
Si… Promusicae engloba unas cuantas discograficas, pero no todas no?¿Y no te amenazaban con denuncias y demás ?

Si, de abogados y demás, pero tampoco muchas. El día que mas me “asuste” fue cuando recibí una llamada de la policía de delitos informáticos , pero al final me llamaban para pedirme la ip y datos de un usuario que precisamente subía discos de Hip-Hop en español.¿Y proporcionaste los datos?
Claro… no se puede hacer otra cosa que darlos… sino seria un delito¿Avisaste al usuario de que habías facilitado sus datos a la policía? ¿Este usuario al final sufrió algún tipo de percance?
Avisé a un moderador que lo conocía. No tengo ni idea de si le paso algo o no… supongo que seria alguna denuncia de alguna discográfica o vete tu a saber…¿cuantos discos habia subido ? Quiero decir, que volumen de discos necesitas para “llamar la atención” y que la policía acabe pidiendo tu ip
Supongo que con uno basta…De todos modos, en vagos.es sería un usuario que publicaba enlaces, pero sería necesario demostrar que la persona que publica el enlace y la que lo subió a megaupload o similar, son la misma, ¿no?
Supongo que comparando ips… Lo que me extrañaba es que eran discos de hip hop español muy poco conocidos…¿Alguna vez tuviste miedo de verte en un jucio?
Si claro, siempre te entra algun miedo, pero bueno como te dije nunca me paso nada grave…Bueno, siempre puedes refugiarte en eso de que “los comentarios son responsabilidad de sus autores”, ¿no?
Según como se mire. Yo creo que el dueño de la web también tiene cierta responsabilidad sobre el contenido que se publique. Es como si hago un foro de pedofilia (por poner un ejemplo extremo) y yo no subo nada… creo que tendría parte de culpa, (no tengo foros de pedofilia ;))A raiz de lo de vagos y promusicae. Existe un nuevo proyecto para montar un foro similar al de música de Vagos, (en concreto al de Hip-Hop), para poder compartir enlaces a descargas directas de albums. ¿Que requisitos crees que debe cumplir para no verse en problemas como los que esta sufriendo actualmente Vagos.es?
Pues… yo si empezara otra vez de nuevo no lo haria en un dominio .es ni en un servidor español. Por otra parte todos los mensajes tipicos que salen al principio de las webs de descargas creo que sirven de pocoY ¿alguna forma para que los usuarios pudiesen estar tranquilos subiendo discos y sin temor a que la policía se acabe interesando por ellos?
A mi parecer, creo que no hay que tener miedo por subir cosas… yo he subido muchas cosas. Las denuncias no van a ir a los usuarios, serían casos muy puntuales… en todo caso irán a por las webs. Algún día se darán cuenta los artistas la difusión que alcanzan sus canciones por internet… y que muchos usuarios les hacen de manera desinteresada ademas…¿Como crees que acabará todo esto? Tendremos que limitarnos a los programas P2P para compartir archivos ? Se acabará incluso con los P2P ? Los miles de sitios que aparecen cada día para subir archivos van a seguir siendo nuestra salvación?
Creo que tarde o temprano habrá un punto de inflexión.. creo que las “descargas directas” , el p2p , seguirá existiendo y seguiran saliendo cosas nuevas… yo creo que la música online , la televisión online y demás online esta aun por estallar… Cada vez mas grupos cuelgan sus discos en las webs… Cada vez mas televisiones hacen webs con sus videos, etc…¿Crees que el modelo de negocio tirará más hacia la publicidad “impuesta” (anuncios que no pueden ser salvables), o hacia servicios de pago?
Creo que los dos cosas pueden funcionar. La gente en internet suele querer todo “gratis” pero a mi no me importaría pagar por algo con calidad. Es decir no me importaría pagar “x euros” si me ofrecen una película para ver directamente con buena calidad de imagen por ejemplo, de echo muchos usuarios pagan las cuentas premium de rapidshare y megaupload sin ningún problema.¿Y no crees que mientras existan formas de ver esa película sin pagar “x euros” ese negocio deja de ser viable?
Pero si das algo de calidad, no importa pagarlos… ahora si quieres ver un estreno por ejemplo , o tienes que ir al cine y pagar 6 euros o bajarte 10 partes de rapidshare y esperar no se cuanto tiempo (o pagar cuenta premium) , o ir al emule… en estas dos ultimas o el sonido o la imagen son pésimas… Si ofrecen buena imagen, buen sonido , por algunos euros para ver en casa… ¿no estaría mal no?Entonces el único modelo de negocio pasaría por servicios de alta calidad y de riguroso estreno, ¿no?
Lo tienen difícil las discográficas, simplemente es encontrar un modelo de negocio adecuado. Lo que esta claro que están viendo que ahora estan en un modelo de negocio anticuado, y su única defensa ahora son las denuncias y el miedo…pero creo que el ofrecer algo de calidad es algo a su favor.Muchísimas gracias por esta entrevista-charla, me quedo con algunas ideas bastante interesantes. ¿Unas últimas palabras? =)
